Fulton County Dementia Awareness Day

Fulton County has formally recognized the growing need to support people living with dementia and their families. In a proclamation from the Board of Commissioners, February 7, 2024 was declared “Dementia Awareness Day,” highlighting that Metro Atlanta is the fastest-aging metro area in the nation.
More than 190,000 Georgians are living with reported dementia, and Georgians wait an average of six years for a diagnosis, often because of stigma and limited access to care. Families carry much of the burden, providing over 607 million hours of unpaid care valued at $7.6 billion.
In response, Fulton County has pledged to become a Dementia-Friendly community through its Senior Service Department and Commission on Elder Affairs, in line with the Georgia Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia State Plan. A cross-sector Dementia-Friendly Sub-Committee, bringing together government, healthcare, public safety, businesses, media, service groups, and residents, is helping lead the way, with a focus on equity, inclusion, access, and awareness so that everyone affected by dementia has a supportive, welcoming community in which to live, work, and visit.
